Born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1920 and later anchored in Iowa City, he became one of the most distinctive painters to emerge from the University of Iowa, a figure whose long teaching career at the university intertwined with a body of work that kept circling back to the big top and the factory floor. Drawn north by his interest in Grant Wood, he enrolled at the University of Iowa, where Wood’s regionalist commitment to rural and small‑town subjects left a clear imprint on his student’s eye.

Burford earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1942 and, after service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Second World War, returned to Iowa City for his Master of Fine Arts, which he completed in 1947, just as American art was beginning to tilt toward abstraction. His choice to remain a figurative painter in that changing landscape gave his work a quietly contrarian edge.

Encouraged by Grant Wood, Burford joined the University of Iowa art faculty in 1947, beginning a painting‑teaching career that would stretch for roughly thirty‑eight years until his retirement in 1986. In the studio and the classroom, he cultivated a visual language rooted in his own experiences, including time spent with traveling circuses that he had first encountered in Mississippi through his father’s work with the local YMCA. He later joined as a teenage helper and painter.
