Iowa History Daily: On March 12, 2006, the second-seeded University of Iowa men’s basketball team captured the BIG 10 Tournament Championship at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, by defeating regular season BIG Ten champion Ohio State by a score of 67-60.
Led by a trio of Iowans including Mason City’s Jeff Horner, Charles City’s Greg Brunner, Carroll’s Adam Haluska, the Hawkeyes went on to 25-9 overall and 11-5 in the BIG 10. Head Coach Steve Alford led Iowa into the Big 10 Tournament, where the Hawkeyes dispatched of the Minnesota Golden Gophers 67-57.
After a 53-48 grinder of win over sixth-seeded Michigan State, Iowa prepared to match-up with an Ohio State team led by Thad Motta and featuring a roster which finished first in the Big 10 regular season standings. However, the Hawkeyes proved up to the challenge and knocked off the Buckeyes 67-60.
Horner, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, led Iowa with 18 points and 10 assists, but the moment of the day belonged to Ames, Iowa’s Alex Thompson who found the bottom of the net on his only 3-point attempt of the day with three minutes left to play.
