Artist Alexander Rummler: Iowa Time Machine July 25, 1867

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On July 25, 1867, world-famous painter Alexander Rummler was born in Dubuque. Best known for his painting of the armistice that ended World War I, the artist also created numerous murals and other well-loved works.

During an eastern Iowa childhood, Rummler attended private schools in Dubuque. Rummler moved to New York City at nineteen to study at the Art Students League of New York before going on to study at Académie Julian in Paris, France, with Jean-Paul Laurens.

For years, Rummler perfected his craft as an Impressionist painter, and he also painted a variety of advertising billboards and commissioned murals. His big break came when Waterman’s Fountain Pens utilized his painting of the World War I Armistice in a nationwide billboard campaign.

Later in life, Rummler found himself working on the mural project for the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration. Rummler’s murals for the WAP depicted life in the towns where he worked. Most notably, he painted sixteen murals and eight panels in Norwalk, Connecticut. #Iowa #OTD #History #Art #Painting
