Bancroft's Mr. Baseball: Iowa Time Machine December 2, 2021

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On December 2, 2021, Billy “Mr. Baseball” Dudding of Bancroft passed away. In Bancroft, long billed as the “Baseball Capital of Iowa,” Dudding was the person you called when you needed to remember who pitched the clincher in 1957 or how many future pros had passed through town.

Across the 1900s, Bancroft’s high school program and summer teams piled up state titles, district crowns, and deep tournament runs. Generations came to see the local diamond as a stage that could launch players to college rosters, minor league contracts, and even major league appearances, a remarkable record for a community of only a few hundred people. Dudding played on the 1945 Bancroft American Legion State Baseball Championship team and later played semi-pro ball. An Iowa State League Champion with the Bancroft Lions in 1951, Dudding continued to play well into the 1950s.

When his diamond dreams ended, he established a cattle trucking business and served in the Korean War. Dudding also documented the careers of thousands of players, perhaps most notably Big Leaguers Denis Menke and Joe “Lefty” Hatten. He mailed packets of statistics and photocopied stories to anyone curious about Bancroft’s baseball past, eager to make sure that a small town’s achievements did not vanish into obscurity. His conversations wove together the feats of St. John’s High School under legendary coach V. J. Meyer, the exploits of summer amateur teams that drew crowds from across northern Iowa, and the occasional visit from college all‑stars who found their way into the Pioneer Collegiate Baseball League.

Every time a writer refers to Bancroft as the “Baseball Capital of Iowa” or a visitor marvels at the town’s disproportionate number of standout players, Dudding’s patient work in preserving statistics and stories lingers in the background. #Iowa #OTD #History #Baseball #SmallTown
