Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On August 3, 1956, Mason City High and Iowa State football great Tom Randall was born. A dominant lineman, Randall stood out on the gridiron and went on to play in a Super Bowl.
Growing up, Randall was a notable athlete. He initially focused on basketball and set an MCHS school record with 21 rebounds in a game. A dominant two-way force on the football field, Randall picked up All-State honors during his senior year at offensive tackle.
Randall next headed to Iowa State to play for Earle Bruce. Starting at defensive tackle as a sophomore, Randall started to disrupt Big-8 offenses. In his senior year of 1977, he captained the Peach Bowl team while also garnering honors as Iowa State’s defensive MVP. Randall also captured first-team All-Big 8 honors as a senior.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Randall in the seventh round (194th overall) of the 1978 NFL Draft with the intention of converting him into an offensive lineman.
