Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On January 17, 2015, the 17th-ranked Cyclones beat 12th-ranked Kansas. A memorable step forward in the Fred Hoiberg era of Iowa State hoops, the win helped cement the program’s return to national prominence.

Iowa State basketball had endured a brutal stretch in the years following its Sweet Sixteen run in 2000. The program cycled through coaches and struggled to find a consistent footing in the increasingly competitive Big 12 Conference. When Fred Hoiberg, a former Cyclone star affectionately nicknamed "The Mayor," returned to Ames as head coach in 2010, he inherited a program badly in need of revival. Hoiberg's patient rebuilding approach began bearing fruit by his fourth season, when Iowa State reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in 2014.

The 2014-15 campaign promised to build on that momentum, with the Cyclones entering conference play with expectations higher than they'd been in more than a decade. Standing in their way was Kansas, a program that had dominated the Big 12 with ruthless consistency under coach Bill Self. The January 17 showdown delivered everything the sold-out Hilton crowd hoped for. Georges Niang, Iowa State's versatile forward, orchestrated the offense with 25 points while Bryce Dejean-Jones added 16. The Cyclones controlled the tempo throughout, frustrating Kansas with their disciplined defensive rotations and crisp ball movement.

When the final buzzer sounded, Iowa State had secured a decisive 86-81 victory. The win was Iowa State's third consecutive triumph over Kansas at Hilton Coliseum, a streak that seemed improbable given Kansas's decade-long stranglehold on the conference. Fans stormed the court in celebration, and the victory propelled Iowa State to a 14-2 record. The Cyclone squad that featured notable performers Niang, Monte Morris, Naz Long, Matt Thomas, Dustin Hogue, Jameel McKay, Abdel Nader, and Dejean-Jones would go on to finish the regular season 25-8, claim the Big 12 Conference tournament championship with a second win over Kansas, and earn a three-seed in the NCAA Tournament. #Iowa #OTD #History #Cyclones #Basketball
