Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On June 10, 1864, David B. Henderson mustered for service in the 46th Iowa Infantry. Henderson eventually became the first Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from west of the Mississippi River.

Born in Scotland, Henderson moved to America as a child and settled in northeastern Iowa. He grew up working on his family’s farm and eventually attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Called to military service initially in 1861, he helped organize fellow students at Upper Iowa for service into what became Company C of the 12th Iowa Infantry. His first major combat came at Fort Donelson in February 1862. There, he led his company in an assault on Confederate breastworks and was hit by a bullet through the neck, a wound serious enough to take him out of service for a time. Missing the Battle of Shiloh because of that injury, he later returned to action and joined the siege of Corinth. At the battle on October 4, 1862, his left foot was terribly mangled, and surgeons eventually amputated it.

His final wartime role came in 1864, when he mustered the 46th Iowa Infantry as a 100-day regiment. That assignment shows that his military career did not end with his own wounds. It moved into the administrative and organizational side of wartime leadership, where men with experience and connections were trusted to help raise new units quickly. The regiment served near Memphis, mostly guarding the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, a reminder that much of Civil War military labor was about securing supply lines and transportation routes.

After the war, Henderson quickly rose in law. By 1880, he was chairing the Iowa delegation to the Republican National Convention, and in 1882, Iowa voters sent him to the U.S. House from the Third District. He would hold that seat for ten terms, serving from 1883 to 1903. His greatest political moment came in 1899, when Reed stepped aside, and Henderson won the speakership. That made him the first Speaker from west of the Mississippi River and the only Iowan ever to hold the office. #Iowa #OTD #History #Politics #CivilWar
