Fremont County Tornado: Iowa Time Machine August 28, 1979

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On August 28, 1979, a tornado tore across Fremont County, killing two people, injuring at least fourteen, and leaving families to measure loss in shattered homes, damaged farms, and interrupted lives.

The storm emerged during an unusual atmospheric pattern. By late August, the strongest upper-level winds that help organize severe thunderstorms often lie farther north, across the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Canada. On August 28, a southward dip in the jet stream, a cold front moving through Iowa, and warm, humid air ahead of that front created an environment conducive to storm development. Satellite imagery showed little development around 4:30 and 5:00 p.m.; thunderstorms appeared between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., and a tornado warning followed shortly thereafter.

The tornado began south of Glenwood in Mills County, lifted briefly, and then established its more destructive track south of Randolph in Fremont County. Moving southeast, it passed near Anderson, Farragut, and Shenandoah, damaging nearly two dozen residences and destroying several farmsteads. One house was reduced to little more than its front porch steps.

East of Farragut, the tornado crossed Highway 2 and destroyed a home near the road. Its deadliest moments came near U.S. 59 south of Shenandoah, where 48-year-old truck driver Jim Penrod of St. Joseph, Missouri, was killed after the storm struck his vehicle, and in rural Shenandoah, where 67-year-old Meredith Lovitt died when her home collapsed around her.
