Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On June 23, 1890, US Congressman and Secretary of War George Washington McCrary passed away.

Born near Evansville, Indiana, in 1835, he moved with his family to Van Buren County, Iowa, in 1837 and later worked his way from school teaching into law, first as a clerk in Keokuk and then as a lawyer admitted to the Iowa bar in 1856.

McCrary first won election to the Iowa House in 1857 as its youngest member and went on to serve in the Iowa Senate and then the U.S. House of Representatives, where he developed a national reputation on election law, contested seats, and railroad regulation.

McCrary helped shape the Electoral Commission after the disputed election of 1876, served as secretary of war under Rutherford B. Hayes, and oversaw policies tied to Reconstruction, labor unrest, and the federal government’s authority in times of crisis. On the day of his death in 1890, the nation lost one of the clearer examples of a public servant who carried local experience into national responsibility. #Iowa #OTD #History #Politics #PublicService
