Haliburton Sets Cyclone Assist Record: Iowa Time Machine December 9, 2018

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On December 9, 2018, Tyrese Haliburton set the Iowa State single-game assist record by dishing out 17 dimes during a win over Southern. A Steve Prohm-era Cyclone standout, Haliburton broke the record set by Eric Heft in a 1974 game against Nebraska.

Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Haliburton was a consensus three-star recruit from Oshkosh North High School, whom he led to a state championship in his senior season. After breaking the single-game Cyclone assist record early in his freshman season, he went on to breakout success. Through 35 appearances in his freshman season, Haliburton averaged 6.8 points, 3.6 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He was the only NCAA Division I true freshman, other than Zion Williamson, to accumulate at least 50 steals and 30 blocks. Haliburton had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.5, which led the Big 12 Conference and ranked second in Division I.

As a sophomore, Haliburton was named to the second-team All-Big 12 Conference despite suffering a season-ending wrist injury. He averaged 15.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game before declaring for the 2020 NBA draft.

Selected 12th by the Sacramento Kings, Haliburton spent a little over a season with the team while finishing third in NBA Rookie of the Year voting. After the Kings traded Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers in February of 2022, he continued to emerge as one of the premier young point guards in the NBA. In 2024, he participated in the Paris Olympics and became the first former Iowa State player to win Olympic gold in men’s basketball. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
