Hawkeye Marching Band: Iowa Time Machine September 14, 1881

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On September 14, 1881, the State University of Iowa formally created the University Battalion Band. Today, the program has expanded from its original fifteen brass players to a 285-member marching ensemble, carrying its music from Kinnick Stadium to bowl games, campus ceremonies, community events, and national broadcasts.

In spring 1865, student Frank Springer petitioned the university’s Board of Trustees to purchase instruments and establish a brass band, though the proposal produced no documented action. Musical groups appeared around campus during the following decades, while the university’s Military Department gained a growing presence. By 1881, the institution, then commonly called the State University of Iowa, possessed the framework for an official military ensemble. The early band served practical and ceremonial purposes: it provided music for military functions and represented the university in public settings.

General Orders Number One, issued from Headquarters University Battalion in Iowa City on September 14, 1881, established the University Battalion Band as the university’s first official band. The order called for a fifteen-piece brass band, and student members led the organization during its earliest decades. For much of the period from 1881 to 1912, the band operated from the university armory near Old Capitol and performed principally in connection with the Military Department.

In 1883, the band performed at Iowa’s game against Cornell College in Mount Vernon, an early expression of the band’s enduring place in collegiate football pageantry and travel. The little battalion band did not remain little. In 1906, the university hired Henry G. Cox as its first professional bandmaster, beginning a transition toward more formal musical instruction. Orie E. Van Doren later helped lay the foundation for the modern university band program. At the same time, the ensemble’s eventual move from the Military Department into the School of Music changed its identity. By the mid-twentieth century, director Frederick C.
