Iowa History Daily: December 5 - Central Volleyball's Dutch Domination

Iowa History Daily: On December 5, 1999, the Central College volleyball team returned to Pella after completing a perfect 41-0 season to capture a second consecutive national championship. The Dutch captured three straight championships while led on the court by Abbie Brown and Candace Wilson.

Coach Megan Clayberg’s Dutch only dropped 9 sets on the entire season, and the 41-match win streak stood as a part of an NCAA Division III record 60 match streak spanning 1998-2000. Brown, a middle-hitter and native of Eldora, shattered the previous kills per game record of 4.11 during her career by posting an astounding 4.70. A two-time AVCA National Player of the Year, Brown also excelled on the basketball court for the Dutch in the offseason.

Candace Wilson of Britt also stood out during the dominant run of the Dutch, where the team compiled an eye-popping 154-8 record over her four-year career. The middle hitter gained first-team All-America honors for three straight years, while also earning National Player of the Year honors during 2000.

Clayberg, the coach behind the on-court success of the Dutch, posted a 370-107 record while serving as head coach from 1991-2002. Central made seven NCAA tournament appearances during her tenure, while capturing the 1998, 1999, and 2000 national titles. In 2000, the NCAA recognized Clayberg as the National Coach of the Year. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
