Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On February 20, 1970, Davenport West captured the first official Iowa High School Volleyball State Championship over Mason City.

Women's sports in Iowa during the late 1960s existed in a vastly different landscape than what Title IX would later mandate. Girls' basketball had long been established in the state, with six-on-six rules that were unique to Iowa and a few other states. Beyond basketball, opportunities for female athletes remained scarce and underfunded. School administrators often viewed girls' sports as extracurricular novelties rather than serious athletic programs deserving equal investment. Volleyball had been played informally in Iowa schools for years, primarily in physical education classes and intramural settings. The sport appealed to educators because it required minimal equipment, could accommodate varying skill levels, and offered vigorous exercise without the physical contact that made some administrators uncomfortable.

Volleyball officially became a sanctioned sport in 1970, reflecting changing attitudes toward women's athletics and the growing pressure from coaches and students demanding competitive opportunities. In Mason City, the first-ever state final featured six finalists drawn from three districts: Elkader Central, Fort Dodge, Sioux City Heelan, Pleasant Valley, Davenport West, and Mason City. As the tournament progressed in a best-of-three format, Mason City advanced past Heelan in one semifinal, and Davenport West beat Pleasant Valley in the other. In the final, West dominated the first set 15-2 before capturing the title with a 15-11 win in the second. Pleasant Valley finished third by besting Heelan in the consolation game.

The spike that won Davenport West the first Iowa volleyball championship reverberated through decades of women's sports in the state. Those pioneering athletes competed in an era when women's athletic achievement received minimal media coverage and even less institutional support. Their championship validated volleyball as a sport worthy of state tournament competition and established a foundation for thousands of Iowa girls to build athletic careers. #Iowa #OTD #History #Volleyball #Learning
