Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On September 20, 1952, Iowa State College football fans saw the 120-member marching band, led by drum major John Wood and directed by Frank A. Piersol, bring a “floating formation” onto the football field, making letters and outlines appear to glide down the gridiron rather than stand still.

The band’s 1952 performance belonged to a longer Iowa State history in which music, athletics, and campus identity grew together. Alvin R. Edgar, the director who preceded Piersol, had shaped the program through the 1930s and 1940s; Iowa State’s music-history record associates Edgar with the marching band’s development and with women’s participation in band activity during the late 1940s. Piersol followed Edgar and directed Iowa State bands from 1948 through 1967, a nearly two-decade tenure that placed him at the center of the program’s postwar expansion.

The 1952 season demonstrated how seriously Iowa State took that task. Campus accounts described “marching band” and “floating formation” as nearly synonymous at Iowa State, crediting Piersol’s band with refining formations in which an entire letter or outline moved down the field. The musicians also experimented that season with “script writing”: the full band became a single long line that traced words as though written by a pen.

Iowa State’s floating formation established a visual language that later Iowa State bands could develop through moving letters, animated objects, themed drills, and pregame traditions. By 1953, the 120-piece band was performing at every home game, appearing in the Veishea Parade, traveling to the Iowa State–Nebraska game, and presenting music that included Meredith Willson’s “For I, For S,” still heard in Iowa State pregame tradition. Two years later, halftime audiences saw elaborate moving images that included a clock with moving hands and a rocket ship traveling the length of the field.
