Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On April 12, 2005, Dale Schroeder passed away at age 86, leaving behind nearly $3 million in savings earmarked for college scholarships to deserving students from small Iowa towns. This act stunned his friends and reshaped lives, proving that one person's thrift could spark widespread opportunity in an era when college costs soared beyond the reach of many working families.

Dale Schroeder entered the world on April 8, 1919, amid the hardships of rural Iowa, raised by a single mother alongside his sister after his father abandoned the family during the Great Depression. College remained out of reach for him, so he joined Moehl Millwork in Des Moines right after high school, dedicating 67 years to carpentry there until retirement. He lived, owning just two pairs of jeans (one for work, one for church) and a rusty truck, while piling up uncashed Social Security checks and wise investments. In post-World War II America, blue-collar workers like Dale embodied Midwestern grit, yet by the 2000s, rising education costs made higher education a privilege few in small towns could afford without debt.

He had confided his wish to fund college for rural Iowa youth facing odds like his, prompting them to form a nonprofit and partner with ACT to support applications. Starting in 2007, they awarded full-ride scholarships covering up to four years at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, or the University of Northern Iowa to students demonstrating the "Dale Factor": perseverance through adversity, judged via essays and interviews rather than grades alone. From hundreds of applicants each year, 33 students benefited, with funds disbursed through 2015.

Dale's legacy endures through "Dale's Kids," the recipients who graduated debt-free and now work as doctors, teachers, and therapists across Iowa and beyond. They gather annually, sharing stories around his old lunch pail, and pledge to "pay it forward" by aiding others, much as Dale instructed. #Iowa #OTD #History #College #Debt
