Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On September 12, 1902, veterinarian and politician John David Shoeman was born on a farm near Waukee. Shoeman grew up in rural Iowa and became a veterinarian, civic leader, Republican state senator, and animal-health researcher.

After attending Waukee High School, Shoeman earned a veterinary medicine degree from Kansas State College in 1928. He practiced veterinary medicine in Dallas Center for nine years. He later worked in Atlantic for years, placing him in communities where veterinarians served as trusted advisers to farmers and livestock producers. His work also extended beyond private practice: he spent three years with the United States Bureau of Animal Industry, the federal agency concerned with animal disease and livestock inspection.

In September 1957, he joined Walnut Grove Products Company as its veterinary research director, bringing scientific and regulatory experience into the business side of animal agriculture. Shoeman’s professional standing helped lead him into elected office. A Republican from Atlantic, he represented Iowa’s 14th Senatorial District, including Audubon, Cass, and Shelby counties, in the Iowa Senate beginning with the Fifty-sixth General Assembly in 1955. He also served on the Atlantic City Council.

His route to politics offers a useful modern reminder that state government has often depended on citizens whose authority came from practical careers in their communities.
