Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On March 19, 1988, Troy Skinner and the Palmer Panthers captured a third straight state title. The victory extended a winning streak that had begun at the start of the 1985–86 season, pushing the run toward what would finish as 103 consecutive victories, still the Iowa prep record and one of the longest streaks in the nation.

In the wake of the movie “Hoosiers” and amid the very real farm crisis that stressed much of rural Iowa, the story of a tiny school piling up wins and playing a fast, high–scoring style resonated far beyond Pocahontas County. Palmer fit that moment perfectly, pairing a wide–open offense with a deep local tradition of boys’ basketball success that stretched back to earlier decades.

Across the 1987-1988 season, Palmer averaged 103.9 points per game, a figure that still stands as the highest single–season scoring average in Iowa boys’ basketball history. Coached by Alden Skinner, who posted a career mark of 380 wins and 108 losses, the team raced up and down the floor, reaching the 100–point mark 15 times that season alone. Behind Troy Skinner’s playmaking and shooting, along with fellow star Brian Pearson, Palmer completed a 27–0 campaign in 1987–88 and secured a third consecutive state title in the smallest class, becoming only the third and, so far, last Iowa program to win three straight boys’ championships.

The years that followed carried Palmer’s story far beyond the box scores and gym bleachers. The 103–game streak drew national media attention, with features that portrayed the Panthers as a real–life version of the small–town miracle teams that had captured movie audiences earlier in the decade. Troy Skinner took his game to the University of Iowa, where he joined the Hawkeyes and extended the visibility of Palmer’s success into the Big Ten spotlight. Both Skinner and Pearson would be recognized by the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Basketball Players Hall of Fame, confirming that the core of those teams belonged among the state’s all–time greats. #Iowa #OTD #History #HighSchoolBasketball #Basketball
