Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On May 25, 2008, a violent EF5 tornado carved a three‑quarter‑mile‑wide scar through Parkersburg and New Hartford, turning a quiet Sunday afternoon into one of the most destructive weather events in modern Iowa history. In just over an hour, the storm killed nine people, injured about seventy others, and left a forty‑three‑mile trail of shattered homes, schools, and businesses across Butler and Black Hawk counties.

During the afternoon of May 25, 2008, a classic supercell thunderstorm developed in northeast Iowa as part of a larger tornado outbreak across the central United States. At about 4:48 p.m. Central Daylight Time, a tornado formed south of Aplington. It intensified rapidly as it moved toward Parkersburg, reaching EF5 strength with estimated peak winds near 205 miles per hour when it struck the south side of town around 4:59 p.m.

The storm destroyed or heavily damaged between 100 and 200 homes in Parkersburg, obliterated Aplington‑Parkersburg High School, and leveled city hall, businesses, and entire residential blocks; survey teams later counted 288 homes damaged or destroyed in Parkersburg alone. Continuing east, the tornado maintained EF5 intensity as it crossed Beaver Creek and hit a housing development on the north side of New Hartford, where more homes were swept from their foundations before the funnel weakened and eventually dissipated north of Dunkerton. In total, seven people died in Parkersburg and two in New Hartford, while damage estimates for the tornado alone reached roughly 75 million dollars.

In the years that followed, Parkersburg became a national example of both vulnerability and resilience. Federal, state, and local agencies, along with private donors, poured millions of dollars into rebuilding homes, infrastructure, and community spaces; by one estimate, 621 houses were damaged in and around the affected area, with 394 destroyed, and more than 1,000 people were left temporarily homeless. Aplington‑Parkersburg High School, described by residents as the heart of the community, reopened in a new 19‑million‑dollar building by August 2009, complete with a tornado safe room and an athletic complex that honored longtime football coach Ed Thomas. #Iowa #OTD #History #Weather #Tornado
