In 1973, Des Moines Register feature writer John Karras and columnist Donald Kaul organized a border‑to‑border bicycle ride from Sioux City to Davenport, inviting readers to join them on a six‑day journey and to follow their reports in the paper. That first ride, held from August 26 to 31, drew roughly 300 riders and demonstrated both the growing appeal of recreational cycling and the capacity of a statewide newspaper to convene people in motion across Iowa’s landscape. The success of the inaugural event, initially called the Great Six‑Day Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, convinced organizers that there was demand for a repeat, more structured experience the following year.

Scheduled for August 4 to 10, the Second Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa followed a route from Council Bluffs to Dubuque, with overnight stops in Atlantic, Guthrie Center, Camp Dodge near Des Moines, Marshalltown, Waterloo, and Monticello. Organizers and Register staff, including ride director Jim Green and others working behind the scenes, had driven the route in advance, coordinated with host communities, and arranged support from the Iowa State Patrol, medical aid services, sag wagons, and baggage trucks.

Approximately 2,700 riders gathered that Sunday morning in Council Bluffs, filling a Howard Johnson motel and spilling onto an adjacent golf course, and an estimated 1,700 completed the journey to Eagle Point Park in Dubuque, all while the nation followed the unfolding Watergate crisis and President Richard Nixon’s impending resignation that week.
