Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On September 23, 1976, Iowa State Cyclone and Cedar Rapids Washington women’s basketball legend Stacy Frese was born. A standout shooter, Frese helped lift Bill Fennelly’s Cyclones to national prominence over an exceptional three-year run for the Cyclones.
Growing up in eastern Iowa, Frese grooved her exceptional three-point shooting prowess while practicing in her driveway. Frese excelled at Cedar Rapids, Washington, before making the short drive south to arrive in Iowa City to play for legendary Hawkeye head coach C. Vivian Stringer. When Stringer left following Frese’s freshman season, the sharpshooter left as well, heading west to Ames to star for new coach Bill Fennelly.
Frese shined at Iowa State while helping lift a moribund Cyclone program to national prominence over her playing career. A two-time All-American, the Big 12 honored Frese as a first-team selection three times. Frese also helped lead Iowa State to its first regular season and conference Big 12 championships in 2000. The Cyclones made trips to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments during her time in Ames, including a run to the Elite Eight in 1999 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2000.
Frese scored 1,494 points, swiped 120 steals, and dished out 484 assists in her three seasons with the Cyclones. A career 45.3% three-point shooter, she managed to knock down 274 threes for Iowa State during her college career. Frese went on to play one professional season for the Utah Starzz after being selected in the 35th overall in the 2000 WNBA draft. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
