Tasty Tacos: Iowa Time Machine August 1, 1961

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On August 1, 1961, the first advertisement for Tasty Tacos appeared in a Des Moines newspaper, marking the humble beginning of a local institution that would come to define a unique flavor in central Iowa.

Tasty Tacos was founded by Richard and Antonia Mosqueda, a married couple who moved to Des Moines from southeast Iowa. With little more than a $500 loan and a family recipe for a fluffy flour-shell taco, they opened their original shop on Easton Boulevard. The couple’s philosophy, inscribed in their motto “Nada Es Imposible” (Nothing Is Impossible), would drive the business forward for generations.

In the early days, Tasty Tacos was a small, takeout-only operation. Antonia managed the kitchen until Richard finished his day job as a barber and joined her in the evenings. The signature item, a puffy flour taco filled with seasoned meat, lettuce, and cheese, quickly drew attention for its homemade quality and distinctly non-corporate style. Word of mouth and loyal local patrons fueled steady growth, and by the late 1960s, a second location had opened with on-site dining, signaling the business’s transition from a single-shop venture to a budding local chain.

As the decades passed, Tasty Tacos became an inseparable part of Des Moines’ culinary landscape. The restaurant weathered the entry of national fast-food competitors like Taco Bell and Taco John’s, and also outlasted many other local establishments. At every stage, the Mosqueda family remained deeply involved in the business, with multiple generations contributing to its operations, menu development, and expansion. Their commitment to family traditions and homemade food sets them apart, making Tasty Tacos a symbol of local pride and perseverance. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
