Downs was born in Marshalltown on March 16, 1867, the youngest of six children of Thomas and Cordelia Downs. His father died when he was an infant, and Downs grew up in a household that had little money for formal amusements. He taught himself card and coin manipulation as a boy, developing the manual dexterity that would define his professional life. Before taking up magic full time, he worked as a telegraph operator, a job that demanded concentration, quick hands, and exact timing. In September 1895, he left telegraphy to pursue a career on the stage, entering the booming vaudeville world that carried performers from town theaters to major metropolitan venues.

Downs found his artistic identity by focusing on coin magic at a time when most magicians presented assorted tricks. By 1897, he had made coins the center of his act and soon earned bookings at Tony Pastor’s theater in New York and the Palace Theatre in London. His signature routine was “The Miser’s Dream,” in which he seemed to pluck an endless stream of coins from the air and drop them into a metal pail. Audiences heard the clink of each coin, a simple sound that made the illusion feel tangible.

Downs performed with a silver dollar, often producing dozens of coins in minutes, and his tours took him around the world. His fame earned him the title “King of Koins,” a deliberately distinctive spelling that became part of his stage identity. He wrote books and instructional materials, including work connected to The Art of Magic, and his sleight-of-hand innovations influenced later generations of close-up performers.
