With the Cardinals on the cusp of winning the championship, Denkinger made a controversial call at first base, ruling Royals player Jorge Orta safe when, in fact, he was out. The Cardinals’ frustration mounted, and the Royals capitalized on the pivotal moment to stage a dramatic comeback, eventually winning the World Series in Game 7. The call, known as “The Call,” overshadowed Denkinger’s career but also became part of baseball lore, illustrating the intense pressures and human imperfections inherent in sports officiating.
