Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On August 28, 1936, prominent Major League Baseball umpire Don Denkinger was born in Council Bluffs. His legacy includes officiating iconic games and earning respect as one of the preeminent umpires of his generation.

Denkinger began his Major League umpiring career in the American League in 1969 and continued through 1998. Over those years, he worked in four World Series (1974, 1980, 1985, and 1991), three All-Star Games, and six American League Championship Series, serving as crew chief in four of those. His assignments placed him at the center of some of baseball’s most memorable moments, including perfect games and historic league-clinching contests, solidifying his reputation for competence and fairness behind the plate.

Perhaps the most enduring, and infamous, highlight of Denkinger’s career came during Game 6 of the 1985 World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals. With the Cardinals on the cusp of winning the championship, Denkinger made a controversial call at first base, ruling Royals player Jorge Orta safe when, in fact, he was out. The Cardinals’ frustration mounted, and the Royals capitalized on the pivotal moment to stage a dramatic comeback, eventually winning the World Series in Game 7. The call, known as “The Call,” overshadowed Denkinger’s career but also became part of baseball lore, illustrating the intense pressures and human imperfections inherent in sports officiating.

Beyond the notoriety, Denkinger was known for his professionalism and grace in handling the fallout, including candid reflections on the lasting impact of the call. Despite occasional fan criticism, he maintained close relationships within the baseball community and was respected for his skill and longevity. His umpiring career also included notable highlights, such as officiating two perfect games and working behind the plate during the thrilling 1991 World Series Game 7 pitching duel between Jack Morris and John Smoltz. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
