Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On July 27, 1986, legendary Hawkeye hooper Bruce “Sky” King passed away. A foundational piece of the Lute Olson era at Iowa, King racked up double-doubles for points and rebounds in 24 out of 25 games during his senior season.
Recruited to Iowa by Dick Schultz, King played three seasons under Olson. While at Iowa, King quickly turned into one of the Big Ten’s best big men, leading the team in scoring (298) and rebounding (228) during his sophomore season.
King went on to average 18.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a junior while providing a solid interior presence for the Hawks. King finished his career with 1,361 points and averaged 21.0 points and 13.3 rebounds per game as a senior in the 1976-77 season.
Selected in the 4th Round of the NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, King instead opted to play professionally in the Philippines. His overseas career included eight seasons in the Philippines, France, and Argentina. While overseas, he once scored 72 points in a game, leading the county to create a postage stamp in his honor.
