Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On June 16, 1904, Claude Maxwell Stanley was born in Corning, Iowa. From engineering and industrial growth to world federalism and peace advocacy, he showed how a Midwestern entrepreneur could try to shape both material progress and international order.

After graduating from Corning High School and earning engineering degrees from the State University of Iowa, he built a career that reflected the twentieth century’s faith in expertise and organized planning. He and his wife, Elizabeth, later settled in Muscatine, where their business ventures and public commitments became deeply rooted in the community.

In 1939, he and his brother Art bought a small engineering firm in Muscatine and transformed it into Stanley Consultants. This company worked on rural electrification, highways, flood control, and water systems. During the war, the firm contributed to defense work, and in 1943 Stanley helped launch Home-O-Nize, later HON Industries, anticipating the postwar boom in housing and office equipment. These enterprises made him a significant figure in Iowa business history, but he treated business success as a platform for larger civic questions.

Stanley joined the United World Federalists in 1947 and became one of its leading voices, arguing that peace required stronger international institutions and a more durable world order. He later, in 1956, created the Stanley Foundation with Elizabeth to encourage dialogue on global issues, and he used books, speeches, and public service to press his case for cooperation across national boundaries. #Iowa #OTD #History #Innovation #Industry
