Iowa History Daily: April 13 - SNL's Gary Kroeger

On April 13, 1957, future Saturday Night Live cast member Gary Kroeger was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa. A writer and actor, Kroeger played a variety of memorable roles including impersonations of Walter Mondale and Donny Osmund.

A graduate of Northern University High School in Cedar Falls, Kroeger migrated east to the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Following graduation in 1981 he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. Often cast in a variety of roles, Kroeger served as a cast staple during Lorne Michaels’s hiatus from the popular television program. When Michaels returned in 1985, Kroeger, as well as the entirety of the cast, found themselves out of work.


Kroeger went on to perform in a variety of films including “The Big Picture,” “Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again,” and as the lead in “A Man Called Sarge.” A notable television game show hosts on “The Newlywed Game” and “Beat the Clock,” Kroeger also appeared in a diverse array of television roles before ultimately returning to Cedar Falls. #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
