Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On May 20, 1921, the Department of Iowa Veterans of Foreign Wars was chartered.

The VFW itself grew out of the difficult return home faced by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection, many of whom came back wounded, sick, or without adequate care or pension support. From those early local groups, the organization developed into a national veterans’ network that emphasized comradeship, aid to veterans, and public patriotism. By the early 1920s, the United States was still adjusting to the social consequences of World War I, and veterans’ organizations had become powerful places for service members to press their claims and define civic belonging.

The chartering of the Department of Iowa on May 20, 1921, gave that larger movement a specific Iowa form. In Des Moines, the state department became the administrative and symbolic center for VFW activity across Iowa, connecting local posts with the national organization while advancing the VFW’s stated mission of comradeship, charity, historical memory, and loyalty to American institutions.

Today, the Department of Iowa continues to serve as part of a national veterans’ system that advocates for veterans, service members, and their families, while also preserving the memory of military service as a public responsibility. Its mission still echoes the concerns of the men who helped build the organization: care, recognition, and a durable community of support. #Iowa #OTD #History #VFW #Veterans
