Spring Blizzard of '83: Iowa Time Machine March 27, 1983

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On March 27, 1983, Iowans in towns from Creston to Lake View woke to a scene that looked less like early spring and more like the inside of a snow globe shaken too hard. Heavy, wet snow driven by strong winds tore down power lines, snapped tree limbs, and collapsed roofs in western and northern Iowa, leaving some residents without electricity for days while they shoveled out from drifts that choked streets and farmyards.

By the early 1980s, Iowans were no strangers to extreme winter weather. The previous decade had brought the historic April 1973 blizzard, which dumped more than 20 inches of snow on parts of the state, and 1983 itself would be remembered for bitter cold and other major winter events. The March 27 storm carved a particularly harsh swath across western and northern counties. National and regional reports indicated that communities from Council Bluffs and Sioux City eastward into interior towns received around 10 inches of heavy snow, often accompanied by winds strong enough to build deep drifts and push trees and power lines to the breaking point.

In smaller towns ranging from Creston in Union County to Collins in Story County and Lake View in Sac County, that combination of weight and wind brought down limbs onto lines, toppled poles. It led to scattered structural failures as older roofs buckled under the load. Utility crews worked long shifts to restore service. Still, in some rural areas, customers remained without electricity for multiple days, relying on wood stoves, kerosene heaters, and neighborly aid while linemen navigated unplowed roads.

The storm’s wet snow also proved especially damaging for trees, stripping branches in shelterbelts, town parks, and farm groves that had just begun to emerge from winter. The March 1983 snowstorm stands as a moment when the promise of spring collided with the enduring power of winter, testing both the physical systems that carry electricity across rural Iowa and the informal networks that keep neighbors warm and fed when the lights go out. #Iowa #OTD #History #Weather #Snowstorm
