On November 15, 2014, Coach Ben Jacobson became the University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball program’s all-time wins leader with his 167th victory, a 79–63 victory over Stephen F. Austin. Under his leadership, the Panthers have become one of the most respected mid-major programs in the country, known for their discipline, teamwork, and steady success.

Before Jacobson took over, UNI basketball had seen flashes of promise but little long-term stability. Serving first as an assistant under Greg McDermott, Jacobson helped build the foundation for the team’s rise. When he became head coach in 2006, he brought a calm, focused approach that emphasized defense and unselfish play. His leadership soon paid off. In 2010, UNI captured national attention with a stunning NCAA Tournament win over top-seeded Kansas, a game that defined the program’s growing reputation for toughness and preparation.

The record-setting win in November 2014 was the result of years of consistent effort. Against a strong Stephen F. Austin team, the Panthers controlled the game from start to finish. The victory moved Jacobson past Greg McDermott for the most wins in UNI history and set the tone for an outstanding season. That year, the Panthers finished 31–4, won the Missouri Valley Tournament, and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament, continuing the standard of excellence Jacobson had established.

Ben Jacobson’s milestone reflected a culture of commitment and pride that continues to define the UNI basketball program. His achievement demonstrated what could be accomplished through patience, preparation, and a shared belief in a vision. #Iowa #OTD #CollegeBasketball #History #Basketball
