Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On March 5, 2022, a destructive series of severe thunderstorms produced multiple tornadoes across Iowa, including one EF-4 tornado that struck areas near Winterset, Norwalk, and Newton. The violent tornado that carved a path of destruction through Madison and Polk counties became the deadliest single twister to strike Iowa since 2008, killing seven people and obliterating homes, businesses, and the comforting notion that early March was too early for such catastrophic weather.

Iowa sits squarely within the geography that enables tornado formation, where cold Canadian air masses collide with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. The state averages roughly 50 tornadoes annually, most occurring between April and June when atmospheric conditions align most favorably for severe thunderstorm development. March tornadoes in Iowa are less common but far from unprecedented. The state experienced deadly March tornadoes in 1976 when a twister struck eastern Iowa, and again in 2006 when a tornado caused significant damage in Des Moines.

The tornado touched down southwest of Winterset around 4:30 p.m., immediately demonstrating its destructive potential as it strengthened rapidly while moving northeast. In Winterset, the twister obliterated homes on the south side of town, reducing well-built structures to scattered debris fields and creating scenes of devastation that veteran first responders described as among the worst they had witnessed. Four people died in Madison County, including two children. The tornado continued its destructive track through rural areas before striking areas near Norwalk, where modern residential developments offered little resistance to winds that National Weather Service surveyors later estimated reached 170 miles per hour.

Three more fatalities occurred as the tornado maintained its intensity over a path that ranks among the longest in Iowa history.

Emergency responders from across the state converged on the affected areas as darkness fell, searching through rubble by flashlight and calling out for survivors. The Iowa National Guard deployed to assist with search-and-rescue operations, while utility crews began the massive task of restoring power to thousands of customers. Governor Kim Reynolds declared a disaster emergency for Madison County. He toured the devastation the following day, standing amid the wreckage of homes where families had lived ordinary lives just 24 hours earlier. #Iowa #OTD #History #Weather #Tornado
