Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On August 20, 2006, Guthrie Center-born CEO of Hardee’s, Jack Laughery, passed away. His career linked an Iowa upbringing to the national spread of fast-food restaurants, a business transformation that reshaped roadside dining and franchise ownership.
Raised in Guthrie Center, Laughery graduated from the University of Iowa in 1957, worked for Connecticut General Insurance Company, and served in the U.S. Army before entering the restaurant business. In 1962, he joined Sandy’s Food Systems in Davenport, a regional chain that competed in the rapidly growing postwar market for quick, affordable meals. He advanced quickly, becoming Sandy’s vice president in 1964, executive vice president in 1967, and president and chief executive in 1971.
Laughery’s pivotal business achievement came in 1972, when he helped negotiate Sandy’s merger with Hardee’s Food Systems. He became Hardee’s executive vice president that year, president and chief operating officer in 1973, and CEO in 1975. During his 15 years as chief executive, Hardee’s introduced the Big Twin sandwich and Made-From-Scratch biscuits, promoted the California Raisins, and acquired Burger Chef.
